Ian Jenkins was born in Cardiff in 1944, and educated at Howardian Grammar School. He graduated from the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1968, progressing to develop a career as a consultant urological surgeon. In 1973 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve, transferring to the Royal Navy as a Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander in 1975. He served in the carrier Ark Royal and at the Royal Navy hospitals at Haslar, Gosport and Gibraltar, as well as with the 3 Commando Royal Marine surgical support team.
In 1983 he was appointed Medical Officer Abroad to the Prince of Wales and was appointed Professor of Naval Surgery in 1988 when he became the Medical Officer in Charge of Haslar Hospital. He was appointed Honorary Surgeon to the Queen in 1994. In 1996 he was became the first Defence Postgraduate Medical Dean and Commandant of the new Royal Defence Medical College. He was promoted Surgeon Rear-Admiral and Medical Director General (Naval) in 1999, and from 2002 to 2006, as Surgeon Vice-Admiral, was Surgeon General of Her Majesty's Armed Forces. On retirement from the Royal Navy, he was appointed Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle, a largely ceremonial role first granted by the Monarch in 1086.
The Travelling Fellowship:
The annual Fellowship will consist of a single award of £1500. The aim of the Fellowship is to provide financial assistance to a military trainee to visit a centre of surgical excellence in furtherance of their own professional and personal development. The Fellowship can only be used to fund travel and subsistence for a single visit and the successful applicant will be expected to present an account of the Fellowship at the following year’s Military Surgery Conference.
Who may apply?
Application is open to British military trainees [regular or reservist] in surgical or allied specialties but only delegates who have registered for the 2010 Military Surgery Conference may submit an application. At the time of submission, trainees should be ST5 or more senior but prior to taking up a consultant appointment. Extra weight will be attached to the submission if there is a direct military application.

The completed application form, a brief curriculum vitae [no more than two pages of A4], a letter of support from the Head of the Department to be visited, a letter of support from your Defence Consultant Adviser and a letter of support from your current Deanery Programme Director need to be posted to the Conference Secretariat.
Who will decide on the successful applicant?
The Academic Committee of the Military Surgery Conference will select the successful applicant. The Academic Committee consists of the Defence Professor of Surgery, the Defence Professor of Emergency Medicine, the Reader in Surgery and the Senior Lecturers of the Academic Department of Military Surgery & Trauma. Their decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
